What is a Student Railcard?

A student railcard is specifically designed for students who want more affordable travel solutions. It costs just £30, which is equivalent to the cost of about three journeys. With a student railcard, you could save up to £159 every year, depending on your travel frequency. It's important to note that the railcard can only be obtained online on the 16-25 Railcard website and cannot be purchased at stations or other railway-related outlets.

The student railcard is available to those who live in the UK and proof of residency is required, such as a driving license or a valid UK passport. Additionally, there is an option to sign up for a three-year railcard for £70, which is available until the day before your 24th birthday.

Can Mature Students Apply for a Student Railcard?

Yes, mature students can also purchase a student railcard. It entitles them to a 1/3 discount on rail fares, even if they fall outside the 16-25 age category. This is commonly known as a 16-25 Railcard for mature students.

To be eligible for a student railcard or a student railcard discount, mature students must meet the following criteria:

  • Attend a recognized university or college for a minimum of fifteen hours per week, twenty weeks a year.
  • Have the "mature student" section of the 16-25 Railcard student application completed by their university or college (not applicable if using a 16-25 Railcard Mature student form).
  • Have an NUS Card, TOTUM Card, or college/university photocard available.

However, it's important to note that mature students attending the Open University are not eligible for a mature student railcard.

Where Can I Go with a Student Railcard?

A student railcard can be used anywhere that accepts railcards , which includes most destinations in England, Wales, and Scotland. This entitles you to various railcard student discounts on train fares. However, please note that the student railcard cannot be used abroad, which is why services like Eurostar do not accept it.

Do I Need to Renew My Student Railcard?

Most student railcards have an expiry date. You can renew your railcard within thirty days of the expiry date. To renew your railcard, simply log into your Railcard account online, click "renew" on the card you wish to renew, ensure all the details are correct, and pay the £30 fee.

What is the Difference Between a Student Railcard and a Santander Student Railcard?

There isn't much of a difference between a student railcard and a Santander student railcard in terms of how they operate. However, a Santander student railcard generally lasts for four years, whereas a regular 16-25 student railcard lasts for one year.

To apply for a Santander student railcard, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have opened a 1I2I3 Student Current Account with Santander; those without a Santander account are not eligible for a Santander Railcard.
  • Use the aforementioned 1I2I3 Student Current Account as your main account, with a minimum deposit of £500 per academic term.
  • Register for Santander's Online Banking service.

Before applying for a Santander student railcard, it's recommended to consider the best student bank accounts available to make an informed decision.
